My Journey: From School Choirs to Singing, Teaching, and Yoga

Hello, and welcome! I thought it would be nice to introduce myself properly and share a bit about how I’ve arrived at what I do now. My path hasn’t been a straight line—it’s wound through performance, teaching, family life, and discovery—but each turn has led me somewhere meaningful. If you’re curious about who I am and what shaped my approach to singing and yoga, I’d love to tell you the story.

Music has been woven into my life since I was very small. I grew up singing in school choirs, attended a musical church, and was surrounded by music at home—my family created space for it, valued it, and made it part of our everyday life. I also learned cornet and piano, which gave me a solid musical foundation and taught me how different instruments work together. That early immersion in music, community singing, and family encouragement planted something deep in me that I’ve never lost.

At eighteen, I went to Bangor University to study music, and I loved it so much that I stayed for a fourth year to complete a Master’s degree specializing in performance and singing. After that came teacher training at Oxford Brookes, and I spent three years teaching secondary music in schools. But even as I was teaching general music, I felt the pull of singing—it was calling me to go deeper, to train more seriously, to really understand my voice.

In my mid-twenties, I was fortunate enough to secure a place at Trinity College of Music in London to do postgraduate singing training. That’s also when I started teaching singing lessons privately—and I discovered that I loved it as much as I loved performing. After Trinity, I worked as a freelance singer, largely with the chorus of Scottish Opera, which gave me years of professional performance experience and the chance to be part of something beautiful and collaborative.

Life shifted when I moved to Otley in 2010. The teaching began to flow in more naturally—through schools, private students, theatre schools, and workshop projects with Opera North. It was during this time that I really started to understand what I valued in teaching: the chance to work with individual voices, to help people find ease and confidence, and to build sustainable vocal function rather than chase quick fixes.

In 2016, something new called to me: Dru Yoga. I trained to become a qualified instructor, and almost immediately, I became fascinated by how yoga and singing complement each other. Both are about breath, alignment, releasing tension, and listening to your body. That connection deepened my understanding of my own voice and completely enriched how I teach. Since then, I’ve had two wonderful children (now 5 and 7), run my own yoga class, taught singing in local secondary schools and privately, and I’m currently working through the fifth module of a six-module BAST Advanced Singing Teacher skills course to expand my knowledge of contemporary singing and music theatre.

I share all this because it’s shaped who I am as a teacher and what I bring to the studio. I’m not here to impose a method—I’m here to work with you, your voice, and where you are right now. If you’d like to know more about what I offer, or if you’re curious about singing lessons or yoga, I’d genuinely love to hear from you.
