Teaching grounded in real experience
I offer singing tuition grounded in over 20 years of real performance and teaching experience. My approach is technically informed; shaped by advanced study at Trinity College of Music and ongoing training with BAST, but always focused on the person in front of me, not the method.
Dru Yoga
I'm also a qualified Dru Yoga teacher, which has profoundly shaped how I understand the relationship between body and voice. That understanding informs every singing lesson I teach.
More about my yoga classesExperience, Expertise, and a Genuine Love of Teaching
I've spent over 25 years teaching and performing as a professional soprano singer. My qualifications include:
An Individual, Technique-Led Approach
I work with the voice in front of me, focusing on sustainable vocal function (breath coordination, alignment, resonance) from the very beginning of every session.
Work may include:
My Dru Yoga training has deepened my understanding of posture and breath. I often use this training to enhance my singing lessons as it assists with vocal freedom and releasing tension.
Dru Yoga: Open to All Abilities
Attend a mindful Dru Yoga class suitable for all levels. Dru Yoga is a flowing, accessible style that focuses on alignment, breath, and releasing physical tension, with key benefits for energy, posture, and overall sense of movement.
Many of my singing students find that yoga deepens their body awareness and supports their vocal work. But you don't need to be a singer to benefit; the class is open to anyone looking for a grounded, mindful practice in a welcoming environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How will we work together?
This depends on what you are looking for; the sessions will be suited to your needs. To give you an example; it could be that you want to work on singing with confidence for a choir audition. For this we may look at vocal technical issues, releasing tension in your body, good posture, dealing with nerves as well as picking out and working on a suitable song.
Should I bring a song to my first lesson
Yes, if there’s something you’ve been working on or really want to sing, then please bring it along to the lesson. If you have the sheet music then please do bring it, or if you know it well we can work with a backing track. If you don’t have a particular song in mind we can choose one in the lesson.
What is an Open Singer; does this mean it's the only genre of singing you teach?
Not at all, my teaching encompasses different styles of singing. I am currently working on the BAST level 5 Advanced Singing Teacher Skills course which has given me a fuller understanding of vocal issues that you encounter more in Music Theatre and Contemporary singing. However, I don’t currently have microphones in my studio so if you want to work on microphone technique I’m not your person.
How long a lesson should I book?
If possible, booking in for an hour when you first come can be really useful so that we have the opportunity to really explore your voice but after that 30 or 45 minute lessons may be long enough.
Who do you work with?
Currently I work with young people and adults who want to work on their singing and performance skills. However, due to my current family situation I don’t have much space for regular after school students and therefore lessons need to be booked using the calendar system on my website, or via me, each time. This means my lessons may be more suitable for those who are happy to come on an ad hoc basis and may be less attractive to children who need a regular time slot.
Will I be able to take singing exams if I want to?
ABRSM, Trinity and LCM exams are on offer for those interested in this. However, no one will be entered for an exam without the prior consent of the teacher and Student or Guardian of the student (for those under 18).
Can I record my lesson?
Yes, I would encourage this but only for your own use at home, please don’t share the recording with others.
Book your first lesson
I work with singers and yoga students on a flexible, ad hoc basis. You can book lessons and classes directly through my calendar, choose a time that works for you, whether it's for singing tuition, Dru Yoga, or both.
First lessons are best booked for a full hour so we can really explore your voice or practice. After that 45 or 30 minute sessions is an option.
