1. Statement of Commitment

I am committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

The welfare of the child is paramount.

This policy applies to:

  • One-to-one singing lessons
  • Workshops
  • Online sessions
  • Any activity involving participants under 18

2. Definition

A child is anyone under the age of 18.

3. Parental Consent

For students under 18:

  • Written parental/guardian consent is required before lessons begin
  • Emergency contact details must be provided
  • Parents/guardians accept the terms of participation

4. Safe Practice Guidelines

To ensure a safe environment:

  • Lessons are conducted in appropriate, professional settings
  • Physical contact (e.g., yoga alignment adjustments) is avoided unless necessary and consented to
  • Online lessons are conducted via recognised platforms
  • Communication with minors is normally via parent/guardian
  • No private messaging with minors without parental awareness

5. One-to-One Teaching

Where one-to-one sessions occur:

  • Parents may remain present if they wish
  • Teaching spaces should be appropriate and professional
  • Online sessions should ideally take place in visible, neutral environments

6. Appropriate Conduct

I will:

  • Treat all children with respect
  • Maintain professional boundaries
  • Avoid favouritism
  • Avoid inappropriate language or behaviour

I expect children and parents to behave respectfully in return.

7. Recognising Concerns

Safeguarding concerns may include:

  • Disclosure of abuse
  • Signs of neglect
  • Unusual injuries
  • Concerning behaviour

8. Responding to Concerns

If a child discloses information:

  • I will listen calmly
  • I will not promise confidentiality
  • I will record factual information
  • I may report concerns to appropriate authorities if required

If I believe a child is at risk of significant harm, I may contact:

  • Local Children’s Services
  • The NSPCC
  • The Police

This may occur without parental consent where safeguarding law requires it.

9. Confidentiality

Information regarding safeguarding will be:

  • Kept secure
  • Shared only on a need-to-know basis
  • Handled in line with UK GDPR

10. Online Safety

For online lessons:

  • Sessions should take place in suitable locations
  • Recording requires parental consent
  • Inappropriate online behaviour will result in termination of sessions

11. Allegations Against the Teacher

If an allegation is made:

  • It will be taken seriously
  • Appropriate authorities may be informed
  • Teaching may be suspended pending investigation

12. Review

This policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure compliance with UK safeguarding guidance.
