I’ve lost count of how many people have said to me, “I’d love to have singing lessons, but I’m worried my voice isn’t very good.” There’s often a pause, a little laugh, and then the admission: they think they need permission to be in a singing studio. I want to be clear about something right from the start: there is no judgment from me about how your voice sounds. Never has been, never will be. If you’re thinking about coming for a first lesson but worried about what I’ll think, I’m here to tell you that worry doesn’t need to hold you back.
The truth is, I don’t teach “good voices”—I teach people. Every single voice that comes through my studio door is starting from exactly where it is, and that’s the only place we can work from. Whether you’ve sung in a choir, sung in the shower, or haven’t sung at all since school, you bring something with you: your breath, your body, your genuine interest in exploring what your voice can do. Those things matter far more than where you’re starting from. My job is to help you find ease in your voice, build consistency, and discover what becomes possible when you’re not holding yourself back with tension or self-consciousness. That can’t happen if you’re afraid of being judged, so I make it my business to create a space where you absolutely won’t be.
If you’ve been thinking about lessons, I’d genuinely love to hear from you—exactly as you are, voice and all. There’s nothing you could bring to a first lesson that would change my willingness to work with you. This is the space where you get to explore, learn, and let your voice develop at its own pace, without anyone standing over you with a critical ear. Come and see what happens.
